Te Puke is regarded as the official home of the little, green, furry fruit known as Kiwifruit or otherwise known as 'Chinese gooseberry'. Te Puke produces more than 40% of New Zealand’s overall production of this sought-after fruit.
Both green and gold Kiwifruit orchards are abound in the Te Puke area and Te Puke hosts an annual Kiwifruit Festival each Spring (September), celebrating the local Kiwifruit industry. Festivities include a Food, Wine and Jazz Festival, a Market Day, a Giant Charity Quiz, a Great Debate, and the selection of a Kiwifruit Queen.
